The sun can prematurely age the skin, called #photoaging commonly called #sundamage. Photoaging can lead to #skincancer. Photoaging happens when ultraviolet hits skin unprotected by #sunscreen causing DNA changes at a cellular level. These changes happen over time which is why once you hit your 30s-40s you wake up and wonder how that #sunspot seemed to appear overnight. Photodamage happens in the deepest layers of skin (dermis) and can take years before the damage becomes visible.

Sun damage signs are the following:

UVA light: -Aging rays. This form of solar radiation damages the skin in all layers from the surface layer (epidermis) all the way to the dermis. Between these layers the other areas damaged are collagen and elastin fibers. This is what gives our skin its youthful firmness and elasticity.

UVB light: -Burning rays. This is the type of solar radiation that irritates the outer layer of the skin. UVB damages DNA more potently than UVA in the epidermis and can cause photoaging, as well as precancerous cells. To make it simple, UVB rays basically damage the “on/off” switch in the melanocytes which results in an increased production yet uneven distribution of melanin.

HOW DOES SUNSCREEN WORK?

#Sunscreen works by blocking and absorbing UV rays through a combination of physical and chemical particles. Physical particles, such as zinc oxide & titanium dioxide are used to reflect UV radiation from the skin. At the same time, chemical ingredients in sunscreen react with the radiation before it penetrates the sin, absorbing the rays and releasing the energy as heat. Look for a sunscreen that offers both UVA & UVB protection of #SPF 15 or higher so you can enjoy your fun in the sun.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

Schedule a consultation. We will discuss your concerns and talk about treatment options. I have a variety of treatment options available.

#Microneedling: is a nonsurgical skin procedure that uses a device that carefully pierces the top layer of skin with a multiple ultra-thin needles. Your body interprets the tiny needle punctures as injuries and rushes growth factors, collagen, and elastin to the scene to make repairs and regrow skin and tissue. You will often hear it called Collagen Induction Therapy. This treatment works best in a series. It does an awesome job of lightening and reversing hyperpigmentation and sun damage. This is due to the power of collagen production and it's ability to restore your skin.

#IPL - laser will remove sun spots, reduce redness. IPL requires a series for best results. You may have "social down-time" where your brown and red spots will look worse before they get better. Typically 3-7 days. This can vary from person to person.

#ChemicalPeels - My go-to and client favorite is the #ElaineBrennanGetGlowingMicroPeel. This peel really leaves a WOW factor. It helps with fine lines, pigmentation, acne, and acne scars. Your skin will really glow. A series of 3 is recommended. Peeling may vary from person to person. I have clients who peel very little and some who peel a lot. The #Getglowingmicropeel is a peel you'll want to consider when you will not be active in the sun.

Appropriate skin care will be recommended to support and enhance your treatment goals. Your home care is 80% of your results.

I have multiple advanced facial treatments that work on pigmentation using active Korean ingredients. I use some hand held devices that help to penetrate the products into the skin. I often customize these treatments using multiple steps and devices. I'll be posting before and after photos soon. I am trying to remember to take them! The results are pretty remarkable.

At your consultation, I will evaluate your skin. I will customize your treatment plan based on my evaluation and your skincare goals. I do not offer cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all approach. Each time you come in, based on your skin that day, we can decide what option is best. You can take a peek at my services page to see more details about the Advanced Facials I offer. Stay tuned for a before and after gallery.

Just remember

We all love the sun but it comes with consequences. Protect your skin, not only because of the acceleration of aging but because it could be dangerous. Reapply SPF 30+ every two hours while active in the sun. Do not leave SPF out in the sun, as it breaks down the ingredients, just like when it is applied on the body. Avoid the sun between 10am-2pm when the sun is the strongest.

Wear sun protective clothing.

Together we can accomplish your skincare goals!
